BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb delivered a strong all-around performance Saturday afternoon, defeating ConverSE, 6-1, at the Webb Tennis Complex.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-3) controlled the match from the outset, sweeping doubles play to seize early momentum before winning five of six singles matches to secure the convincing victory.
Gardner-Webb wasted no time claiming the doubles point. The duo of Boyd Schreiber and Kaua Cressoni set the tone with a decisive 6-1 win at No. 1. Alexandre Bergeron and Johan Van Wijk followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 3, and Noah Zeiger and Adam Patry capped the sweep with a hard-fought 7-6 triumph at No. 2.
With the early 1-0 lead in hand, the Runnin' Bulldogs carried that energy into singles competition.
Bergeron led the charge at the top of the lineup, cruising to a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Schreiber added another straight-set victory at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3), while Van Wijk was equally impressive at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-0 decision.
Zeiger battled to a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4, showing composure in the second-set tiebreak to seal the match. At No. 6, Patry fought back after dropping the opening set to earn a gritty 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 victory in a third-set super tiebreak.
Converse claimed its lone point at No. 3 singles in a tightly contested three-set match, but Gardner-Webb's depth proved too much throughout the afternoon.
"It is good to get back into the win column," said head coach Mike Griffith. "I feel that we have established momentum heading into March."
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, March with a trip tot take on USC Sumter. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m.
