SEWANEE, Tenn. – Gardner-Webb (3-1) men's tennis took down Sewanee by the final of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Charlotte Guerry Indoor Courts. The Tigers picked up the doubles point but it was all GWU in singles action as the Runnin' Bulldogs swept all courts.
"This was a great learning experience," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Give credit to Sewanee for the level they came out and played in the first half of the match. However, we met their challenge and came away with another win. We will use this coming week to prepare for VCU."
Alexandre Bergeron and Johan Van Wijk teamed up to take down Drew Rukavina nd Henry Hyden, 6-0, on court two, but Sewanee came back with wins on courts three and one while capturing the first point of the match.
However, singles competition belonged entirely to Gardner-Webb. Bergeron evened the match for the Dawgs with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win on court one before Boyd Schreiber put GWU ahead for good with a straight-set (7-5, 6-1) win at No. 2 singles. Shortly after, Kaua Cressoni put the Runnin' Bulldogs one point away from the match win with a tough three-set defeat of Samuel Schroerlucke on court three.
Van Wijk secured the victory for Gardner-Webb after taking down Lucas Wrigley by set scores of 7-5 and 6-0 during No. 5 singles action. With the match already captured, Noah Zeiger and Adam Patry put the finishing touches on a perfect singles round with straight set wins at No. 4 and 6.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Sunday, February 15 as they travel to Davidson, N.C. to take on Virginia Commonwealth. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
