BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb softball team finished its annual Runnin' Bulldog Classic on Sunday afternoon, defeating Furman 10-2 via run rule in the final game of the weekend
Gardner-Webb used three big innings and a pitching gem on Sunday afternoon to win its third game of the weekend. The Dawgs scored two in the second, four in the third, then four in the fifth, while surrendering just two runs and one hit total to Furman
Taylor Dreher continued a mammoth weekend at the plate for Gardner-Webb in the second, finding the gap in right center to put GWU in front 2-0. Dreher opened the third inning by scoring on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0, Runnin' Bulldogs.
Lily Barry and
LY Forte would walk across the plate in the third ahead of a
Jailyn Tineo sac fly, putting the Dawgs ahead 6-0
Furman hit back for two runs, both unearned, in the fourth to make the score 6-2, but that was all thatÂ
Glenna McLamb would allow in the circle. The freshman right-hander tossed all five innings, allowed just one hit, two runs and struck out six to get her second decision of the weekend
On to the fifth where GWU needed and found four runs to end the contest early. Forte started with a ringing double to score Dreher- she'd come around to score as part of a two-run single by
Caitlin Colley to bring Gardner-Webb to the brink, up 9-2. With
Brooke Freschi at third with two outs,
Reese Collier hit one back through the box that the Furman pitcher couldn't handle, allowing Freschi to score the winning run, 10-2
At the plate in the victory, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored 10 runs on eight hits, six different Gardner-Webb players recorded a hit and six recorded at least one RBI, while the Dawgs struck out just once in 22 at-bats
