Runnin' Bulldogs Make It Four Straight Wins, Beat New Haven 9-3 in Spring in The Springs Finale

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb softball team made it four straight wins on Sunday afternoon, defeating New Haven by a 9-3 final in the final game of the Spring in The Springs Tournament

Things didn't start off so well for Gardner-Webb, with New Haven jumping out to a 2 -0 lead in the first inning. By the time the third rolled around however, Gardner-Webb found its groove on offense and eventually cruised to a fourth win in as many games

In an eight run third inning for GWU, senior shortstop Annicka McLaughlin opened the scoring with an RBI single back through the box. Sophomore second baseman Reese Collier then promptly sent McLaughlin home on a single through the left side, tying the game at 2-2

Following Collier, the big bats showed up in an even bigger way for GWU. Senior first baseman Maggie Knight posted an RBI double down the right field line, then senior right fielder Jailyn Tineo doubled to right center, putting the Dawgs in front 5-2

Sophomore left fielder Brooke Freschi then had the biggest hit of the game. Freschi roped a ball to straight away center that caromed off the wall, allowing two runs and Freschi to score for a three-run, inside the park home run. After all that, Gardner-Webb jumped in front 8-2

New Haven got one run back on an error in the fourth, but senior Caroline Johnson scored Tineo on a double in the fifth to give it right back, putting GWU ahead by a 9-3 score that held as final.

In the circle, senior right-hander Alli Stidham tossed 3.0 perfect innings of relief, and sophomore right-hander Hannah Frye entered in the second and threw 3.0 innings, allowing a single unearned run

At the plate, four Gardner-Webb players posted at least one hit with Collier finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI, Tineo going 2-for-3 with two RBI, Johnson going 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Freschi finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI

Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Colley also extended her impressive on base streak, having reached in all 21 games so far this season for the Runnin' Bulldogs
