FARMVILLE, Va. — Gardner-Webb men's tennis battled through a tightly contested match Thursday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 4–3 victory over Longwood at the New Lancer Courts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs showed resilience throughout the afternoon, using a strong showing in singles play to overcome an early deficit and secure the road win.
Gardner-Webb started the match on a high note in doubles competition as
Boyd Schreiber and
Kaua Cressoni delivered a dominant 6–1 win at the No. 1 position to give the Dawgs early momentum. However, Longwood captured the other two doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1–0 lead heading into singles play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs responded quickly once singles began.
Noah Zeiger evened the match with a convincing 6–2, 6–3 victory at No. 4 singles, and Cressoni followed with a straight-set win (6–3, 6–3) at the No. 3 spot to push Gardner-Webb in front.
Johan Van Wijk continued the Runnin' Bulldogs' momentum with a strong 6–4, 6–2 victory at No. 5 singles, giving Gardner-Webb a critical third point and putting the visitors on the brink of clinching the match.
After Longwood picked up wins at No. 6 and No. 2 singles to tie the match at 3–3, the outcome came down to the top singles court.
Alexandre Bergeron delivered in the decisive moment, battling through three sets to defeat Timeo Puech 6–2, 3–6, 6–3 and secure the match for Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the court on Monday, March 9, traveling to UNC Greensboro for a non-conference clash. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
