GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb (9-3) men's tennis team picked up a strong road victory Monday afternoon, defeating the UNC Greensboro (2-10), 5–2, at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Gardner-Webb (9-3) used a dominant performance in singles play to secure the win after a tightly contested doubles point opened the match.
The Spartans initially grabbed momentum by edging the No. 1 doubles match, but the Runnin' Bulldogs responded quickly to claim the doubles point. The pairing of Adam Patry and Noah Zeiger earned a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Alexandre Bergeron and Johan Van Wijk sealed the point with a 7-5 win at the No. 3 position.
Gardner-Webb controlled the match in singles competition, winning four of the six courts.
Boyd Schreiber led the charge with a gritty straight set win at No. 2 singles, battling through a tiebreak before pulling away for a 7-6, 6-1 victory. Kaua Cressoni followed with a strong three-set performance at No. 3 singles, taking the final set 6-2 to give the Runnin' Bulldogs another key point.
Zeiger delivered a steady showing at No. 4 singles, defeating Andrew Black 7-5, 6-1, while Van Wijk dominated at the No. 5 spot with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory to clinch the team result.
"UNCG is a very tough team", said head coach Mike Griffith. "They will do well in conference, and I am happy to pick up another win. Our doubles finished strong after a slow start."
Gardner-Webb returns to the courts on Thursday, March 12, traveling to face Division II Wingate. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
