LEXINGTON, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team continued its strong season on Friday afternoon with a decisive 4–0 victory over Presbyterian in the semifinal round of the Big South Championship at the Lexington County Tennis Complex. The win moves Gardner-Webb to 16–5 on the season and into the conference championship match.
Gardner-Webb set the tone early in a tightly contested doubles session. The Runnin' Bulldogs secured the opening point by winning two of the three courts, with all three matches requiring tiebreakers. The duo of Alexandre Bergeron and Noah Zeiger delivered the clinching win at No. 3 doubles, edging Thomas Anderson and Eduardo Valentin, 7–6. Kaua Cressoni and Boyd Schreiber also picked up a key 7–6 victory at the top spot to help GWU claim the doubles point.
In singles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs carried that momentum into a dominant performance. Kaua Cressoni quickly put Gardner-Webb ahead 2–0 with a convincing 6–1, 6–2 win over Gabriel Godoy at No. 5 singles. Johan Van Wijk followed with a strong effort at No. 4 singles, battling to a 6–2, 7–5 victory over Eduardo Valentin to push the lead to 3–0.
Noah Zeiger sealed the match for Gardner-Webb at No. 2 singles, bouncing back after dropping the second set to defeat David Mamalat 6–2, 3–6, 6–1 and clinch the team victory.
Several other courts were still in progress when the match was decided, including strong efforts from Schreiber, Graham Bourne, and Bergeron, who were all battling through competitive matches.
With the shutout win, Gardner-Webb advances to the conference championship match, facing the winner of No. 2 seed NJIT and No. 3 seed Longwood tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
