WINTSON-SALEM, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's season came to a close on Friday afternoon as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to Old Dominion, 4–0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. Despite the final score, Gardner-Webb battled throughout the afternoon against a nationally ranked Monarchs squad, competing in several tightly contested matches before the match was clinched.
Old Dominion seized early momentum by securing the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Kaua Cressoni and Boyd Schreiber faced a strong pairing and dropped a 6–2 decision. The Monarchs then sealed the doubles point at No. 3, where Alexandre Bergeron and Noah Zeiger were defeated 6–3. The match at No. 2 doubles between Johan Van Wijk and Graham Bourne and Old Dominion's duo was left unfinished with the Bulldogs trailing 5–4 when the point was clinched.
In singles play, Gardner-Webb fought to extend the match, but Old Dominion capitalized on key moments to pull away. Johan Van Wijk faced Piet Steveker at No. 3 singles, where the Monarchs' earned a straight-sets win, 6–4, 6–0, to give Old Dominion a 2–0 advantage. Soon after, the Monarchs pushed the lead to 3–0 as Zech Hamrouni defeated Graham Bourne at the No. 5 spot in a competitive match, 6–2, 7–6 (7–4).
The deciding point came at No. 1 singles. Alexandre Bergeron battled Adam Majchrzak but ultimately fell 6–4, 6–4, clinching the match for Old Dominion and ending the Runnin' Bulldogs' tournament run.
Several other matches were left unfinished at the time of the clinch. Noah Zeiger had forced a third set at No. 2 singles, Kaua Cressoni was locked in a tight second set at No. 4, and Adam Patry had opened strong at No. 6 before the matches were halted.
