Coach Scott Mattingly

Scott Mattingly

Scott Mattingly is in his second season as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb, joining the program during the summer of 2018.

Mattingly joined the Runnin’ Bulldogs after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. He spent four seasons on staff with the Eagles, joining the MAC program prior to the 2014-2015 campaign.

Mattingly’s impact on the Eastern Michigan program was significant, with 14 wrestlers advancing to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship during his four seasons. Five individual wrestlers finished as runners up at the MAC Championships and Kayne MacCallum won the 184-pound title this past season – marking Eastern Michigan’s first individual MAC champion since 2009.

Mattingly’s efforts helped the Eagles finish third at the 2018 MAC Championships, the team’s highest finish since 2012.

A former standout himself on the mat, Mattingly was a four-time Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament placer during his career as a student-athlete at Central Michigan.

He was runner up at 149 pounds in 2011 and qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing third in 2012. He finished with 18 wins in his final season on the mat, and was an Academic All-MAC selection twice.

Mattingly also earned a spot on the NWCA Academic All-America Team following his sophomore season.

He graduated from Central Michigan with a degree in advertising in 2014.
