WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Gardner-Webb will play its first game in
eight days Sunday afternoon (Nov. 18) at Wake Forest, doing battle
with the Demon Deacons at 1:00 pm in Lawrence Joel Coliseum
(ESPN3).
The
Runnin' Bulldogs (6-6, 1-1 Big South) have used a three-game win
streak to get back to .500 on the season, holding off Winthrop on
December 3 and blasting Alice Lloyd and South Carolina State by
identical 87-57 scores last week.
During
its current streak, Gardner-Webb has dished off an impressive 62
assists and is shooting 50.8 percent from the floor. The generous
sharing of the basketball has resulted in six players averaging
more than 7.0 points per game during the win streak and an average
of 43.3 points per game in the paint.
The
Runnin' Bulldogs have never beaten a team from the fabled Atlantic
Coast Conference in men's basketball, going 0-14 since playing its
first game against the ACC in 2002. The closest Gardner-Webb has
come to knocking of an ACC member came in a pair of three-point
losses - at North Carolina in the 2005 season opener (83-80) and at
Virginia Tech (65-62) in the 2008 season opener.
Guard
play continues to be a strength for Gardner-Webb this season, with
Wofford transfer Jason
Dawson leading the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game and
leading the Big South in three-point field goal accuracy at 46.8
percent (29-of-62). The 5-foot-10, 175-pound redshirt junior also
averages 2.2 assists per game and has made 21-of-26 from the free
throw line in 12 games (80.8 percent).
Freshman guard Max
Landis has also been a bright spot, averaging 11.7 points and
2.2 assists per game. Veteran Laron
Buggs (6.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.5 apg) and transfer Tashan
Newsome (5.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.9 apg) each produce outstanding
overall floor games each night out and freshman lead guard Tyler
Strange (team-high 2.8 assists per game) has excelled running
the offense when called upon.
The
backcourt rotation got deeper last week. Redshirt senior
sharpshooter David
Brown, who missed the last five games of the 2010-2011 season
and the first 10 games of this season with an injury, came off the
bench to score nine points in just four minutes against South
Carolina State - and shot better than 40 percent from long range
against Big South competition last season.
Coach
Chris
Holtmann has done a great job building depth early this season,
with 10 players currently averaging at least 10.5 minutes per game
- with five guards and five frontcourt players in that balanced
rotation.
Sunday's
game at Wake Forest will be broadcast live on WGWG-FM (88.3 /
wgwg.org), with Fabian Fuentes calling the action. The game will
also air on ESPN3, with Evan Lepler and former Demon Deacon star
Randolph Childress providing the call.
