October 19, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Nashville, T.N. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team continues to make history this season, as they sealed a spot in the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament on Thursday night with their 4-2 win over Lipscomb.
The win moves the Bulldogs to 4-1-1 in conference play and guarantees them a spot for the first time ever in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament.
The 'Dogs did not make it easy on themselves, however, as they quickly found themselves down early, as Lipscomb scored first when Lip Terry gave the Bison a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
However, the home team would add to their 1-0 lead only 10 minutes later, when at the 35:10 mark, Lipscomb's Alexi Achilleos found his teammate T.J. Williams, who put a shot past GWU's keeper Tyler Kettering and into the back of the net, increasing the Bison's lead to 2-0.
Yet the Bulldogs did not go away, as at the 37:20 mark senior Carlton Hughes put GWU on the board, scoring his first goal of the season to cut the Bison's lead to 2-1.
With time winding down in the first half, junior Richard Godfrey knotted the score up at 2-2, notching his team high fifth goal on the year.
In the second half both teams came out firing but it was the Bulldogs that found the back of the net.
At the 83:55 mark, Godfrey scored his second goal of the match which would prove to be the game winner, putting a ball past Lipscomb's keeper Danny Prichard to give the 'Dogs a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Boris Gatzky added an insurance goal only minutes later when at the 85:03 mark he found the back of the net helping to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Zach Burkett got the assist on the goal.
Senior keeper Tyler Kettering had five saves on the match.
For the game the Bulldogs out shot the Bison 21-11, with nine of those shots on frame.
The Bulldogs (5-6-3, 4-1-1 A-Sun) will look to seal a first round bye in the A-Sun Conference Tournament when they will wrap up their conference play on Saturday afternoon, October 21, against the Bruins of Belmont at 2 p.m. central time.
