Gardner-Webb Has Solid Showing At Appalachian State Invitational

BOONE, N.C. – In its first meet of the indoor season, the Gardner-Webb men's and women's track and field teams had a solid showing Saturday at the Appalachian State Invitational.

Two GWU student-athletes won an event on the day. On the men's side, Elliott Haynie took home the pole vault title after clearing 4.71m (15'5.50"). Teammate Jeremy Longshore finished third in the event with an effort of 4.41m (14'5.50").

Josh Hudson recorded a top-three finish in the 3,000m. Hudson was third after finishing in 8:58.02.

Erin Goodrum took home a fourth-place finish in the mile after finishing in 4:41.36. Fellow Bulldog Charley Steinke was 10th in 4:51.06.

In the 55m hurdles, Paul Steinke was 10th after crossing the line in 8.65.

A quartet of Bulldogs was in the top 10 of the shot put. Matt Knippen took high honors for GWU with a fifth-place finish. Knippen had a toss of 14.39m (47'2.50"). Corey Scott was right behind him in sixth. Scott's best effort was 14.15m (46'5.25"). Michael Buckshaw was ninth while Cody MacArthur came in 10th. Buckshaw's toss was 13.82m (45'4.25") while MacArthur's best effort was 13.60m (44'7.50").

MacArthur had a top-ten performance in the weight throw as well. He finished eight with a throw of 14.71m (48'3.25").

On the women's side, pole vaulter Kelly Bridges tied for first with an effort of 3.50m (11'5.75"). Fellow Bulldog Merissa Hawkins tied for sixth after clearing 3.05m (10').

Carlene McLean posted a time of 2:26.12 in the 800m. The time was good enough for second place.

In the 3,000m, Abby Callahan also brought home a second-place finish. Callahan finished the race in 11:09.60. Teammate Bree Tharp was seventh with a time of 11:57.92 while Carrie Minard's time of 12:03.30 was good enough for eighth place.

Caryn Doane finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 11.58m (38'). Sarah Wyszynski, the starting goalkeeper on the women's soccer team, was 14th with an effort of 10.69m (35'1").

The 4x400m relay team garnered a fourth-place finish after crossing the line in 4:13.88.

The Bulldogs return to action in January when they travel to the Niswonger ETSU Invitational on the 26th and 27th.
