
Lady Bulldogs Tennis Team Advances to Quarterfinals

MACON, Ga. The Gardner-Webb women`s tennis squad entered the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship play Wednesday afternoon as the #8 seed. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the #9 seeded Lipscomb Bison, 4-2. With the win, the Bulldogs move on to face #1 East Tennessee State in tomorrow`s quarterfinals.
Lipscomb got off to a good start taking the doubles` point from the
Dogs, but Gardner-Webb would not fold, picking up victories
in four of the six singles bouts.
Freshman Jenny Gomez picked up a victory over Lipscomb's Erin
Moakler at the #1 spot, 6-3, 6-3, while at the #3 singles slot Sara
Zirnheld defeated Olivia Ellis of Lipscomb, 6-3, 6-2.
Also scoring for the Lady Bulldogs was Monica Walser at the #4
position, as she handled her opponent Jamie Aid, winning in
straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, and Tracey Tonsor, who fought back from a
first set loss to defeat Mary Beth Muncher of Lipscomb in three
sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The GWU duo of Zirnheld and Amy Beavers also turned in a victory in
doubles play, winning 8-5 over Lipscomb's team of Moakler and
Aid.
The Lady Bulldogs (6-17, 2-4 A-Sun) will start their quarterfinal
match against #1 East Tennessee State at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
