
Men Win Pirate Invitational, Women Take Third

GREENVILLE, N.C. Behind a personal-best run by senior Lucas McAneney, the Gardner-Webb men's cross country team posted a first-place finish last weekend at the Pirate Invitational, which was hosted by East Carolina.
McAneney took fifth overall, but was first in team scoring, crossing the line in 25:46. Teammate Joshua Hudson recorded the second-best time for the team scoring, finishing in 26:29. He was seventh overall.
Alex Nimmo and Tim Israel were 16th and 17th overall, respectively, while placing fifth and sixth in the team scoring. Nimmo posted a time of 27:21 while Israel came behind him just 33 seconds later at 27:54.
Bulldog Charles Steinke took eighth in the team scoring with his time of 28:38, finishing 20th. Justin Keziah was 23rd overall and 11th in the team scoring after crossing in 29:14.
On the women's side, the women took third behind close-knit running by the GWU team.
Once again, Abby Callahan led the way for the Bulldogs, finishing 12th in the team scoring and 16th overall with a time of 19:24. Rookie Laura Scott was the next one to cross the line for head coach Brian Baker's squad. Scott placed 16th in the team scoring while placing 25th overall. Scott had a time of 20:32.
Right behind her was Carrie Minard, who finished the course in 20:40. Minard was 27th overall and 17th in the team scoring.
Beth Long and Bree Tharpe each completed the race in the top-20 in terms of team scoring and in the top-35 overall. Long posted a time of 20:59, which was good for 18th in the team scoring and 18th overall. Tharpe took 19th with a time of 21:13. She was 33rd overall.
Rebecca Silleman and Diana Palka were the next two to cross the finish line for GWU. Silleman took 20th in the team scoring with a time of 21:58 while Palka was 21st in 22:14. Silleman was 35th overall while Palka garnered 36th place.
The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround as they prepare to host the
GWU Duel on Friday at 5 p.m. The women will follow at 5:30. The
Bulldogs will compete against Wofford, Appalachian State and
UNC-Asheville.
