Gardner-Webb Falls, 4-3, to Fighting Camels

The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team put up an impressive three
goals against Campbell University Thursday night, but were unable
to come out on top. The Bulldogs, despite have a 3-1 lead in the
first half, allowed three unanswered goals by the Fighting Camels
and fell 4-3.
Gardner-Webb came out strong against the Fighting Camels. Bradley
Morrison put the Bulldogs on top, 1-0, when he headed the ball in
off of a cross from the left side. Morrison's third goal of the
season came in the fourth minute of play. Both Zach Burkett and
Jordan Gaines were credited with the assist.
The Camels answered right back in the 12th minute of action with a
header goal of their own. Cam Oyuga's first goal of the season tied
the match up a 1-1.
After a couple of nice shots by Miguel Pinzon, Gardner-Webb struck
again. Richard Godfrey put the Bulldogs back on top, 2-1, with his
seventh goal of the season. Pinzon played a through ball into
Godfrey who struck the ball off the right post into the net.
Pinzon and Godfrey hooked up again in the 37th minute of action to
put the Bulldogs up 3-1. Pinzon played another through ball into
Godfrey who dribbled around Campbell's goalie and scored. The goal
gave Godfrey his eighth for the season. The Bulldogs took their 3-1
lead into halftime.
The second half proved to be bad news for Gardner-Webb. After the
whistle blew, it seemed as if Campbell controlled the entire second
half. The Fighting Camels shot the ball 16 times in the second half
alone. Gardner-Webb only had one shot in the second half.
Campbell pulled it to 3-2 when Josue Soto scored his seventh goal
of the season. Soto hit a well struck ball, through traffic, that
got passed Gardner-Webb's Dane Geraci. Geraci did all he could,
stopping six shots in the second half alone. 10 minutes later, the
Fighting Camels struck again. Ben York received a ball in the box
and shot it past Geraci to tie the match at 3-3 with 20 minutes to
play.
Three minutes later, York scored again to put Campbell on top 4-3.
York's second straight goal came off of a rebound in the box. Not
long after, Pinzon received his second yellow card of the match and
Gardner-Webb was forced to play with only 10 players for the
remainder of the game.
With only 10 men on the field, the Bulldogs were unable produce any
offensive pressure and fell 4-3. The loss marks Gardner-Webb's
fourth in a row after scoring first.
Gardner-Webb faces another tough road match at Mercer this
Saturday. Play is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
