
Gardner-Webb Women Remain Undefeated, Men Fall To College Of Charleston

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Behind another strong performance from multiple swimmers, the Gardner-Webb women's swim team downed CCSA member College of Charleston 164-98 while the Gardner-Webb men's team fell to the Cougars by a score of 159-103.
The women improve to 8-0 on the year while the men's win streak ends at three as the squad falls to 3-2 on the year.
The women's team got off to a great start as the 400 medley relay team of Whitney Hooley, Stepheni Stadnik, Rachel Warkentin and Kelly Gueltig took first place with a time of 4:04.02. The Bulldog squad consisting of Sarah Steadman, Mallory Baxter, Leslie Hallquist and Victoria Bryant placed third in the event with a time of 4:10.73.
Rooke Elizabeth Ketterer recorded the sixth-fastest time in school history in the next event, the 1,650 free. Her time of 17:33.42 earned her the victory while teammate Heather Roka placed second with a time of 17:36.61.
However, Ketterer was far from satisfied. She won the 200 free, which happened to be the next event, in a time of 1:55.54. Again, her time was the sixth fastest in school history. Teammate Kelly Gueltig was second in 1:57.48 while Grace Whiteside touched the wall in 2:00.34, which was good enough for fourth.
A trio of GWU swimmers touched the wall in consecutive order in the 100 back, with Corey Hughey taking the lead with a time of 1:00.16. Hooley was second in 1:00.26 while Sarah Steadman placed third after touching in 1:00.52.
Ketterer wasn't the only one who took more than one first-place finish on the day as Stadnik won the 100 breast in a personal-best time of 1:09.16. It was also the 10th fastest in school history. Isabel Olivas placed third in the event after garnering a time of 1:10.54. In the 11th race of the meet, the 500 free, Ketterer once again claimed the top spot after finishing in 5:10.61. Roka and Whiteside took second and fourth, respectively.
Hughey, like Ketterer and Stadnik, also won an individual race. Hughey took home the title in the 50 free after touching in 24.78. Warkentin was third in the event with a time of 25.37.
Hooley won the 200 back in 2:09.63 while teammates Steadman and Bryant were second and third, respectively. Steadman finished in 2:10.46 while Bryant did so in 2:13.25.
Olivas earned the top spot in the 200 breast after finishing the race in 2:28.61, edging out Cassie Tubb, who finished in 2:28.75.
In the 400 IM, Bryant's time of 4:40.55 was good enough to win the race. The time was also the ninth fastest in school history.
Heather Roka was second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:13.79 while teammates Carrie Kibler and Leslie Hallquist were fourth and fifth, respectively. Gueltig was third in the 100 free with a time of 55.14
The 400 free relay team of Ketterer, Gueltig, Hughey and Stadnik placed second with a time of 3:40.77.
On the men's side, the quartet of Kyle Hooley, Craig South, Steven Caudill and George Partin combined to claim second place in a time of 3:37.94, which was the second fastest in school history.
In the 1,650 free, Adam Suggs overcame a large deficit to overtake second-place finisher Eric Lehman with 200 yards to go. Suggs went on to win the race in a school record-setting time of 17:00.81. Teammate Michael Roka was third in 17:26.32.
Partin bettered his school-record time in the 200 free by claiming first place in a time of 1:45.71.
Hooley placed second in the 100 back with a time of 54.02, but the time was good enough for a school record.
Craig South's time of 1:01.16 in the 100 breast established a school mark while teammate Jay Winn's time of 1:02.91 was good enough for third in the event and second on the school chart.
Caudill placed second in the 200 fly, but like many of his counterparts, he established a school record with his time of 2:01.00. Adam Middleton took third in the event with a time of 2:02.79.
Partin's time of 48.46 in the 100 free bested his previous school-record time by nearly a half second. He took second in the event. South moved up from second to first on the school chart for the 200 breast after he was runner-up with a time of 2:14.19. Winn took third in 2:17.33.
Middleton took home the title in the 400 IM with a school-record performance of 4:22.60. Miller was third in the event after touching the wall in 4:26.03. Miller's time is the second best in school history.
GWU's foursome of Hooley, Cuadill, Kegley and Denaj Seymour finished second in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:20.24. The time was the third fastest in school history.
Both teams look to protect the home pool during their next meet,
which is Nov. 9. Davidson makes the short trek to Boiling Springs
for a 7 p.m. contest.
