Gardner-Webb Loses Heartbreaker at Home
October 07, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Gardner-Webb lost a heartbreaker at home on Sunday afternoon,
falling 2-1 to Lipscomb in A-Sun play.
Both teams battled for possession in the early stages of the first
half. Lipscomb was the first try and make a move in the game. The
Bisons began to pressure the ball more, taking several shots on
goal, but all were stopped by Gardner-Webb goalie Dane Geraci.
Gardner-Webb picked up its pressure shortly after. Logan Swaim had
a great opportunity to put the Bulldogs on top, but the Bison
goalie was able to get his fingertips on it. The shot resulted in a
corner kick, where Jordan Gaines put a great shot on goal. However,
the ball was deflected off a defender and was stopped by a
one-handed save.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure up and had several more late
opportunities in the first half. With only a few minutes left
before the break, Gardner-Webb struck. Richard Godfrey recorded his
sixth goal of the season by placing a nice shot past the Bison
goalie. Zach Burkett and Guy Mbamyamsig were credited with an
assist on the play. The Bulldogs would carry their 1-0 lead into
halftime.
Lipscomb came out in the second half looking for an answering goal,
and got the equilizer from Ben Page in the early stages of the
second half. Page scored off a deflection in front of
Gardner-Webb's goal to tie things up 1-1. The Bisons captured a 2-1
lead on a turn-around shot from Garrett McLaughlin, which came off
a pass into the box from Jorge Suarez.
Lipscomb almost put another goal on the board, but Geraci had a
great save against the Bisons' breakaway to keep the game within
reach, but GWU could not come up with any more offense.
The Bulldogs will step out of conference for a 7 pm ET match at
Presbyterian College on Thursday in Clinton, S.C.
