Bulldogs Power Past Presbyterian In Non-conference Action

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Four Gardner-Webb student-athletes recorded double figures in kills, enabling the team to power past Presbyterian Tuesday evening in non-conference action by a 3-0 count. Game scores were 30-24, 30-23, 30-26.
The Bulldogs improve to 11-12 on the year while the Blue Hose fall to 15-7. PC has won 15 of its last 18 matches.
Junior Bethany Martin led the way for GWU as she tallied 19 kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Senior Audra Harrison notched a match-best 15 kills while adding 13 kills for a .400 percentage and a double-double.
Heidi Steinebrunner and Ashley Pridgeon each accounted for 10 kills. Steinebrunner had 11 digs for a double-double.
Sophomore Regina Feagin dished out 50 assists and 11 digs while also serving up three aces. Defensively, Katie Matykowski totaled 13 digs while sophomore Jessica Clayton recorded two solo blocks and four block assists in the match.
After dropping the first point of the match, GWU responded by taking 12 of the next 17 opportunities. The Bulldogs doubled up the visitors at 14-7 on a kill by Martin.
PC tried to tie the match up down just 21-20, but Pridgeon answered the call as she spiked the ball through the defense for a two-point lead. An attack error allowed PC to pull within two at 24-22, but after a kill by Harrison and an ace by Feagin, GWU easily won the match, 30-24.
In game two, GWU rushed out to a 9-4 lead on a kill by Martin. After the Blue Hose pulled within one at 14-13, Martin again responded with a kill.
A service ace by PC once again pulled the team within one at 17-16, but Harrison's kill, followed by an ace from Steinebrunner, a kill by Pridgeon and two errors by the Blue Hose enabled the team to stake a large enough lead it would not relinquish.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 26-20 on a kill by Martin. After a PC point, the teams traded points the rest of the way, with the Bulldogs winning the first game on an ace by Martin, 30-23.
The third game proved to be tight throughout, as neither team could take a commanding lead early in the contest. A ball handling error by Feagin allowed the Blue Hose to tie the match at 17-17.
After the teams battled back and forth, an attack error by Steinebrunner gave PC a three-point lead. However, it would not last long as PC gave the ball back to the Red and Black with an attack error of its own.
Harrison eventually tied the match on a kill at 22-22 and Pridgeon gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with a kill. An attack error by Carolyn Fabros gave GWU some breathing room and despite the Blue Hose's attempt to climb back in the match, Steinebrunner and Martin recorded back-to-back kills to end the match at 30-26.
The Bulldogs look to continue their winning ways as they hit the
road for two critical A-Sun matches this weekend. GWU takes on
Kennesaw state at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 before playing at
Mercer on Saturday at 2 p.m.
