Runnin' Bulldogs Fight Off Radford For 93-83 Win
November 17, 2007 | Men's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. Grayson Flittner scored 15 of his
career-high 28 points in the first half, and Gardner-Webb held off
fatigue and Radford to take a 93-83 road win over the Highlanders
Saturday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-2), playing their fourth game in five days,
and for the third day in a row, would obviously be tired by the end
of this one. Gardner-Webb was sharp early, building an 11-point
halftime lead and led by as many as 14 in the second half
before its road-weary legs began to show wear.
Radford (1-3) took advantage midway through the half, cutting into
the lead slowly and pulling within a single point with just over
five minutes left in the game. The Highlanders couldn't capture the
lead, however, as Gardner-Webb held on and eventually pulled away
with a strong and accurate effort at the free throw stripe.
Flittner was 5-for-5 from the three-point line in the opening half,
helping stake Gardner-Webb to a comfortable lead. He finished by
hitting six treys for the second night in a row (6-of-10) and was
8-of-16 from the floor overall.
As hot as he was early, Flittner needed some help in the final
half. He got it from teammates Thomas Sanders and Aaron Linn.
Sanders narrowly missed a triple-double with 22 points, 10 boards
and eight assits, and Linn connected for 21 points and nine
rebounds as the two combined with Flittner for 71 of the
team's 93 points (76.3 percent) Saturday night.
A total of 60 fouls were called in the game, with both teams
combining to shoot 81 free throws and each knocking down 31.
GWU was 31-of-41 in the game, and shot a strong 27-of-53 from the
floor as well (51.0 percent).
Ameer Johnson led Radford with 20 points, and Martell McDuffie had
18 for the Highlanders.
Gardner-Webb will finally return to campus late Saturday night, but
will return to the road early next week in preparation for Tuesday
night's matchup at Connecticut. The Runnin' Bulldogs and Huskies
will meet at the Hartford Civic Center on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7:30
pm ET the two team's second meeting in five days.
Radford will trek to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Sunday for an
early-week matchup at Air Force.
