Hatters Defeat Lady Bulldogs, 6-1

Deland, Fla. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team lost their first Atlantic Sun conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Stetson Hatters 6-1 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
With the loss the Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 early as they lost the doubles point, falling in all three doubles bouts. At the No. 1 spot, the team of Laura Kriett and Amy Beavers fell to Katherine Nowicki and Valentina Galbarina of Stetson 8-5, while GWU's squad of Jenny Gomez and Monica Walser lost 8-6 to the Hatter's Katherine St. Clair and Breanna Atkinson. At the No. 3 slot, Stetson's Anna Leonenko and Catherine Canady defeated the tandem of Carol Pancia and Kasey Ellis 8-5.
In singles action the ‘Dogs battled hard, winning at the No.4 spot and taking two other bouts to the third set before falling in the end.
Gomez won at the No. 4 position, defeating Canady of Stetson in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.
At the No. 1 spot GWU's Kriett battled back from a first set 6-3 lost to win the second set 6-4. However, Galbarina of Stetson came back to win the third set 11-9 and defeat Kriett.
Like Kriett, Walser fought back from a first set loss to win the second set 7-5 before ultimately falling to Nowicki of Stetson in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, and 10-5.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action this Monday, February 26, when they will return home to face off with A-Sun foe North Florida. The match is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. at the Webb Tennis Complex.
