Lady Bulldogs Conquer Mountaineers 4-3

Boone, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team picked up their seventh win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, as they held on to beat the Mountaineers of Appalachian State 4-3 in non-conference action.
Once again the GWU Lady Netters fell behind 1-0 early, as they dropped two out of the three doubles bouts to lose the doubles point to Appalachian State. The GWU combination of Carol Pancia and Kasey Ellis won at the No. 3 doubles position, as they cruised past Appalachian State's duo of Mallory Cook and Frances Blanton 8-2.
In singles action, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves in a dog fight as three of the six contests went three sets.
Sophomore Jenny Gomez bounced back from a loss on Tuesday, to easily defeat Lauren Holton of App. State in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. The win pushes Gomez to 7-1 overall at the No. 3 slot.
Fellow classmate Amy Beavers continued her winning streak, pushing it to four straight, as she dropped the Mountaineers' Frances Blanton 6-4, 6-0.
Also winning for the Bulldogs was freshman Laura Kriett and junior Monica Walser, who each took three sets before ultimately defeating their opponents. Kriett beat Anja Gugger of ASU at the No. 1 slot, in what proved to be the closest match of the day, as Kriett took the first set 7-5 before falling in the second set 2-6. Yet Kriett bounced back to win a third set tiebreaker 7-6, to take the third set 7-6 and the match. At the No. 4 spot, Walser rebounded from a first set 5-7 loss to win both the second and third set 6-4, taking the match away from Appalachian's Amanda Cash.
With the win the Lady Bulldogs improve to 7-10 on the year.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to A-Sun conference play this Friday, March 23, when they will play host to the Bears of Mercer at 1 p.m.
