March 23, 2007 | Women's Tennis
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team picked up their third Atlantic Sun conference win on Friday afternoon, as they took four out of the six singles bouts to defeat the Mercer Bears 4-3 at the Webb Tennis Complex.
The Lady Netters failed to pick up a win in any of the three doubles contests, putting them down 1-0 early to the Bears who won the doubles point.
Yet the GWU Lady Netters once again bounced back to erase the early deficit by winning four of the six singles matches to claim a 4-3 victory.
Freshman Laura Kriett has been a huge addition for the Lady Bulldogs at the No. 1 position, as she won her 10th match of the season on Friday afternoon as she defeated Mercer's Lauriane Auvergne in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomores Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers continued their winning ways at the No.3 and No. 5 positions, respectively as Gomez dropped the Bear's Anna Wieslander in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, while Beavers posted a win over Mercer's Rachel Kerley at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-1. The win is Beavers' fifth straight victory at the No. 5 slot.
Not to be outdone, junior Monica Walser crusied past Priscilla Dias of Mercer, winning 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot, helping to seal the victory for GWU.
With the win the Lady Netters improve to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Gardner-Webb will look to add on to their two-match winning streak on Tuesday, March 27, when they will play host to the East Tennessee Bucs at 2 p.m. at the Webb Tennix Complex on the campus of Gardner-Webb University.
