No. 23 Stetson Blanks GWU, 15-0, Friday Night
April 06, 2007 | Baseball
DELAND, Fla. - Gardner-Webb fell for the second night in a row
at No. 23 Stetson, as the Hatters pounded out 17 hits to spark a
15-0 win at Melching Field.
Gardner-Webb (13-21, 3-8 A-Sun) is reeling, having lost 11 times in
its last 15 games. GWU has dropped nine straight games at Stetson,
dating back to the 2003 season.
Stetson (26-9, 9-2 A-Sun) put Friday's game away with four runs in
the bottom of the third inning.
A single and double put two in scoring position and a costly miscue
sparked a four-run burst. Brian Pruitt reached on the error, and
Jeremy Cruz scored giving Stetson a 2-0 edge. Justin Bass then
delivered the decisive blow, a three-run home run to left to give
the Hats a 5-0 lead.
Stetson plated a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more
in the sixth, seventh and eighth to blow the game open
completely.
Hatters' starter Chris Ingoglia (6-2) didn't allow himself to get
into trouble at all, mowing through the Bulldog order for much of
the night. Ingoglia threw just 98 pitches through 8.0 innings,
scattering six hits and fanning five GWU batters.
Drewery (2-5) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs and 11 hits
in 4.1 innings of work. Six different Bulldogs collected hits for
GWU, with Jamall Kinard (1-for-3, 2B, stolen base) and Tyler
Johnson (1-for-3, 2B) collecting the lone extra-base knocks.
Bass was on fire for the second night in the row for Stetson, going
3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored to pace the Hatters'
17-hit attack. Frawley, Cruz and Clendinin also had three hits for
the hosts.
Gardner-Webb will try to avoid the sweep on Saturday, as lefty Ben
Campbell takes the mound at Noon ET.
