Bulldogs Lead A-Sun Outdoor Championships After First Day Of Competition

Johnson City, Tenn. – Only one point separates the top three teams at the 2007 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but the Gardner-Webb squad was sitting alone in the lead after the first day of the competition.
When the rest of the field began competition at 2:00 p.m., ETSU picked up a quick 14 points with Zachlynn Blackburn earned the first of her two individual titles in the hammer throw. Blackburn posted a mark of 46.09 meters in the event, topping Gardner-Webb's Elizabeth Maxwell by just over one half meter. Maxwell recorded a school-record throw of 45.57m (149'6").
In the discus, Maxwell took fourth while teammate Brieanna Thompson was fifth. Maxwell had a throw of 36.50m (119'9") while Thompson had a mark of 36.24m (118'11").
GWU earned 18 of the 28 awarded points in the pole vault, finished with Kelly Bridges, Merissa Hawkins and Victoria Argus finishing 2-3-4, respectively.
Bridges cleared the same height as the winner from Belmont. However, she had a miss at the final height of 3.35m (10'11.75") and landed in second place. Hawkins earned a third-place finish after clearing 3.20m (10'6") while Argus garnered four team points with her vault of 3.05m (10').
At the conclusion of the first day, Gardner Webb sits in first with 34 points, followed by Jacksonville (33), ETSU (33), Belmont (18), Campbell (12), North Florida (12), Kennesaw State (8), and Lipscomb (2).
