May 21, 2007 | Baseball
MACON, Ga. Gardner-Webb senior Matt Tafazzoli (Charlotte,
N.C. / Providence HS) was named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week Monday
afternoon by the league office.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Tafazzoli earned the award for the second
time this season, with both instances coming on the strength of
lights-out relief performances.
Tafazzoli put the Diamond Dogs on his back this past weekend,
picking up two saves and working 3.0 scoreless innings in the
team's series win at North Florida which secured
Gardner-Webb's spot as the fifth seed in the 2007 Progress Energy
Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
In the opener, Tafazzoli worked 2.0 scoreless innings in a 6-4 win,
allowing just one hit and ending the game on a strikeout. With
Gardner-Webb's back against the wall in Friday's rubber match,
Tafazzoli entered another 6-4 game with two men on and no outs in
the ninth. He worked through the next three batters in order to
save the game.
For the season, Tafazzoli has posted a 4-1 overall record and 4.62
ERA with a team-high three saves. In 15 relief appearances, he has
forged a 2-0 mark with a strong 1.86 ERA (34.1 innings of
work).
Tafazzoli was also named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week in early March
following 7.0 brilliant innings of relief in Gardner-Webb's
17-inning win at the University of Georgia.
Gardner-Webb (25-30) will battle No. 2 seed Mercer in the 2007
Progress Energy A-Sun Tournament's first round on Wednesday, May 23
in DeLand, Fla. First pitch at Melching Field is set for 11 am
ET.
The Diamond Dogs took two of three from the Bears on May
