DELAND, Fla. Hours after falling by to Florida Gulf Coast late Friday evening, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team lost by a 3-0 count to Stetson Saturday afternoon. Game scores were 25-30, 20-30, 23-30.
The Bulldogs fall to 8-9 on the season and 0-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Hatters improve to 7-8 on the year and 2-0 in conference competition.
Senior Ashley Pridgeon led the way for GWU, posting a match-high 14 kills. Junior Heidi Steinebrunner added 10 while Audra Harrison and Bethany Martin each chipped in eight.
Sophomore Regina Feagin dished out a match-best 41 assists while compiling a double-double with 10 digs.
Defensively, Harrison notched a match-high 18 digs while junior Matykowski had 16 and Pridgeon 11.
The Bulldogs could muster a mere four total blocks, with sophomore Jessica Clayton having the lone solo stuff. Martin had a team-best three block assists.
GWU jumped out to a 10-6 lead on an attack error by Rebecca Orzechowicz. The Bulldogs extended their lead to five at 14-9 on a kill by Pridgeon, forcing a Stetson timeout.
The Hatters responded, tying the match at 16. The teams continued to trade points until an attack error by the Bulldogs gave the Hatters a 19-18 lead. Stetson increased its lead to three at 23-20, but GWU responded, pulling to within one at 25-24 on a kill by Martin. A service error by GWU ignited the Hatters' offense as the Bulldogs offense sputtered down the stretch in the 30-25 loss.
Stetson jumped out to a small lead in game two from the outset and never trailed. The Bulldogs kept it close for the first half of the game, but the Hatters were able to put together a run thanks to errors by head coach Chris Phillips' team, winning the game by a 30-20 count.
Down 2-0 in the best-of-five match, GWU attempted to make a valiant comeback, just as it did a year ago at Campbell, which earned it a spot in the A-Sun tournament for the first time in school history.
It didn't look good from the beginning as GWU was quickly down 4-0. A service error by Stetson put the Bulldogs on the board and a 7-2 run knotted the game at 7-7. The Hatters retook the lead and increased their advantage to eight at 19-11 on a service error. GWU responded with a 6-1 run, but was unable to pull any closer in the contest.
The Bulldogs were doomed by miscues all day, tallying 28 attack errors while compiling just a .142 attack percentage. Stetson comprised a .250 attack percentage.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 25, when they
play host to Furman at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
