Gardner-Webb Drops Home Opener, 2-1, to Liberty

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped its home opener, 2-1, to the visiting Liberty Flames on Saturday night at Varsity Field. The loss marked the Bulldog's third in a row.
The first half of play was a defensive battle between the two teams. Liberty tried pushing the action but the Bulldog's back line held strong. Liberty was caught six times with offsides penalties and only managed two shots on goal.
The Bulldogs had seven corner kick oppurtunities in the first half, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Richard Godfrey almost put away a beautiful cross by Bradley Morrison during the early stages of the match, but the shot barely missed the right side netting.
The second half of play was a lot more active than the first. Liberty pushed the ball quickly up to field, and in the 47th minute, Joshua Boateng scored the first goal of the match to put the Flames on top 1-0.
After a midfield battle for possession, the second goal came from Liberty's Adrian Bumbut in the 62nd minute of action to put the Flames up 2-0. Boateng assisted the goal.
After a pair of quick yellow cards by Liberty, Bradley Morrison struck a direct kick over the Flames' defensive wall and past the keeper for the Bulldogs first goal of the match. The goal put the score at 2-1 and the momentum went to the Bulldogs.
Despite their best efforts to tie the match, the Bulldogs could not seem to get past Liberty's defense. The match ended in the 90th minute with a score of 2-1 in favor of Liberty.
Gardner-Webb's next match will be on Friday, Sept. 14, against
Radford. The Bulldogs will be playing in the Wingate Inn Classic in
Rock Hill, SC.
