
Warkentin And Elerding Highlight Exhibition Meet

WILMORE, Ky. The Gardner-Webb men's and women's swim teams looked to be in top form as they competed at the Christian Invitational recently.
Leading the way for the young Bulldogs was Rachel Warkentin, who posted four events, was part of a relay win and established four pool records. Sophomore Elizbeth Ketterer notched three individual wins, was part of a relay victory and established three pool marks. Corey Hughey had two individual wins, a relay win and three pool records.
GWU opened the meet with a pool-record in the 200 free, finishing in 1:40.28. Warkentin followed the team up with an individual title and pool record in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:13.21. Ketterer followed suit in the 500 free, finishing first in a record tie of 5:11.40.
Hughey's time of 2:07.60 in the 200 back was good enough for a pool record while Victoria Bryant took second, finishing in 2:09.63. In the 200 fly, Warkentin garnered the top spot with another pool record. Warkentin finished the race in 2:13.38 while rookie Lyndsey Roka was second (2:14.65) and Carrie Kibler was third (2:17.65).
Ketterer's next pool record came in the 400 IM as she touched the wall in 4:42.53. Kiah Bellow (4:44.56) and Bryant (4:50.95) rounded out the top three. In the 200 free, Ketterer didn't set a pool record, but edged Kelly Gueltig for first. Ketterer notched a time of 2:00.12 while Gueltig was second in 2:01.08.
A trio of Bulldogs took the medal stand for the 100 fly. Warketin established a pool record with a time of 57.93. Newcomers Hillary Leonard and Veronica Case nearly broke one minute, but took second and third.
Hughey's pool record came in the 100 back as she edged Bryant for first place. Hughey went 1:00.24 while Bryant ended the race at 1:00.34. Sarah Steadman was third with a time of 1:01.42.
Bulldogs took the top three spots in the 50 free as Warkentin clinched the title (25.04). Case and Hughey touched the wall at the same time, finishing in 25.13 for a second-place tie.
Rounding out the women's events, the GWU team established a pool record in the 200 medley. The squad touched the wall in 1:48.86 to win the event.
On the men's side, Patrick Elerding, Steven Caudill and Samuel Woods all won two individual events, were part of two relay winning teams and each established two pool records. Casey Brutus also tallied a victory while Elerding had two second-place finishes.
The Bulldogs started the meet with a pool-record win in the 200 free. The foursome touched the wall in 1:29.10.
Caudill followed the team up with a victory in the 200 IM (2:02.73). Elerding took the 100 breast title with a time of 1:00.96. Brutus was second with a time of 1:01.14. Woods won the 200 back in a time of 1:59.69.
In the 200 fly, Caudill, Adam Middleton and Derek Gore finished in the top three. Caudill won the event in a time of 1:59.32. Middleton earned the silver in 2:02.99 while Gore was third in 2:04.93.
Elerding won the 100 fly in 53.66 while Caudill and Middleton rounded out the top three. Caudill had a time of 54.69, edging out Middleton who posted a time of 54.77.
Brutus won the 200 breast in 2:16.90 while Collin Burchins was a close second, finishing in 2:17.26. Woods won the 100 back in 55:18 while George Partin was second in a time of 57.80.
The Bulldogs finished the meet in fine fashion, winning the 200 medley relay in a pool-record time of 1:38.79.
GWU opens the season Saturday when it hosts VMI and North
Carolina A&T at 9:30 a.m.
