Men's Soccer Falls in Big South Finale, 1-2
October 30, 2008 | Men's Soccer
The Gardner-Webb men's
soccer team ended its regular season at Winthrop Thursday night.
Senior Miguel Pinzon scored his fourth goal of the season just
before halftime, but Winthrop was able to notch a goal in both
halves to take the match 2-1. The win advances Winthrop to 5-1 in
the Big South, while dropping the Bulldogs to 5-3.
The Eagles struck first in the match off a header from a free kick taken in the 43rd minute of action. Henry Kalungi scored his first goal of the season for the Eagles after receiving a ball in the box by Michael Luk, and heading it past GWU goalie Dane Geraci.
Gardner-Webb answered quickly with a header of its own just over a minute later. Senior Bradley Morrison played a nice ball into the box and Pinzon was able to flick it over Winthrop goalie Patrick Mitrovich to tie the match at 1-1, two minutes before the half.
Winthrop took control in the second half, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-4, while also gaining five corner kick opportunities to the Bulldogs zero. Geraci did his best in goal, tallying four of his five saves in the second half alone.
However, the Eagles were able to break through in the 72nd minute with a goal by Miguel Casajuana. Winthrop's Stephen Nsereko sent in a cross and Casajuana connected on a header from 10 yards out to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles kept up the pressure after the goal, tallying two more shots on goal, but Geraci came up with two big saves to keep the game close. Gardner-Webb's offense, however, was unable to re-group and the Bulldogs were forced to watch as Winthrop held them scoreless for the rest of the match.
Gardner-Webb lost several of its key players to injury Thursday night, and will carry a light roster in its last regular season match against Clemson next Tuesday, November 4.
As of Friday, the Bulldogs are listed at 3rd in the Big South standings. The worst the Bulldogs can finish is 4th in the Big South depending on how Liberty finishes up its conference schedule. Liberty will face VMI and Asheville in its last two conference matches.
