Gardner-Webb Has Strong Showing At Davidson Invitational

– The Gardner-Webb women's swim program posted a solid
second-place effort with 668 points while the men's team notched a
bronze medal with 616 points at the Davidson Invitational.
Starting off the meet for the women, GWU's quartet of Rachel
Warkentin, Kelly Gueltig, Elizabeth Ketterer and Sarah Steadman
notched a second-place effort in the 4x200 free relay, touching the
wall in 7:43.56.
Ketterer sustained her strong performances in the very next event,
the 1,650 free, as she won with a time of 17:14.29. In the 200 fly,
Warkentin won by nearly two seconds, finishing first in
2:06.65.
Corey Hughey put together a solid outing in the 100 back, finishing
second in 57.51. She followed it up with a silver medal in the 50
free, touching in 24.05.
The 4x100m relay team also took second place after compiling a time
of 3:56.65. Victoria Bryant, Stepheni Stadnik, Warkentin and Hughey
combined for the effort.
Warkentin and Lyndsey Roka posted top-four times in the 100 fly.
Warkentin touched the wall in a mere 57.80 for second place while
Roka's time of 1:00.82 was good enough for fourth.
Rookie Kiah Bellows continued her stellar rookie campaign by taking
the 200 breast title in 2:28.93. The time marked the 10th best in
school history. Mallory Baxter was just behind her for silver as
she posted a 2:29.17 time.
On the men's side, the foursome of George Partin, Samuel Woods,
Steven Caudill and Chris Musco notched the school's best 4x200m
relay time in the program's illustrious history. The squad touched
the wall in 7:04.36 for fourth place.
Caudill was able to improve on the fourth-place effort in his first
individual event, earning a bronze medal in the 200 fly with a time
of 1:54.64.
Partin also garnered a third-place performance in the 200 free, his
first individual event, with a time of 1:42.48.
The 4x100m relay team of Matthew Leonard, Casey Brutus, Patrick
Elerding and Partin was good enough for fourth place in the event,
as the quartet teamed up to finish in 3:33.36. The time was the
second fastest in the school's history.
Rookies Derek Gore and Musco improved upon their preliminary times
as the duo took fourth and fifth, respectively in the 200 back.
Gore's time of 2:00.48 was a personal best and the third fastest in
GWU history while Saxon Simpson posted a time of 2:07.41 for fifth
place in the event. Musco finished eighth.
A trio of Bulldogs finished in the top eight of the 500m free. Adam
Suggs, Gore and Michael Roka went six, seven and eight,
respectively.
Elerding then posted an easy victory in the 100 fly by over a full
second to his nearest competitor. Elerding's time of 50.47
established a new school record after previously topping the old
one in the preliminary round.
Brutus and Collin Burchins were third and fourth, respectively, in
the 200 breast finals. Brutus earned the bronze medal with a time
of 2:14.71 while Burchins was just behind him in 2:15.97.
Caudill earned a solid time of 2:01.22 in the 200 IM, earning him a
fourth-place finish. Leonard took seventh with a personal-best time
of 2:05.75 while Burchins was eighth in 2:09.83.
In the final event for GWU, the foursome of Adam Middleton,
Caudill, Gibson and Abram Miller had a time of 3:24.90. The time
marked the fifth fastest in the program's history, earning the team
a third-place effort.
The Bulldogs now have some time off before returning to the pool.
GWU will host Duke Jan. 17 at 1 p.m., in its next competition.
