Dominique Hudson's Career Night Leads Bulldogs Past South Carolina State, 81-74
November 25, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Dominique Hudson's career-high 22 points led the
Gardner-Webb women's basketball team past South Carolina State
Tuesday evening by an 81-74 score in front of 219 fans in Paul
Porter Arena.
The Bulldogs improve to 3-1 on the year, which is the program's
best start since moving to Division I. SCSU falls to 0-3 on the
young season.
In addition to Dominique Hudson's 22 points, she also tied her
career high with seven assists while pulling down five rebounds.
Junior Margaret Roundtree chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds.
Meranda Burnett and LaTroya Pope each notched 10 points in the
contest.
GWU came out of the break with more intensity than it showed in the
first half, eventually tying the score at 43-43 with 16:27 to go on
Roundtree's lay-up. However, it was Pope's free throw at the 11:17
mark that gave the home team a lead it would not relinquish. The
charity toss sparked a 6-0 run that forced a 30-second timeout by
the visitors.
Up by just five, 61-56, with 7:55 to play, Pope's jumper gave the
home team a seven-point margin. Burnett answered quickly with a
jumper that rattled around on every inch of the rim before
dropping. After a missed jumper by SCSU, Burnett drilled a deep
three pointer on Dominique Hudson's assist for a 68-56 lead.
The home team would push its lead to 17 after Povilonyte drained
all three free throws after getting drilled by LaKeisha Scott on a
three-point try with 3:33 to go.
The Bulldogs allowed the Lady Bulldogs to get within seven on two
occasions, but the defense stiffened as GWU took home the
victory.
In the first half, GWU took its last lead at the 2:36 mark on a
lay-up by Courtney Epps, making the score 29-28. From that point on
though, the Bulldogs were outscored 11-6 as the home team committed
a couple of fouls that sent the visitors to the line.
At first, the Bulldogs looked as if they were going to put SCSU
away handily, jumping out to a 6-0 lead on Dominique Hudson's
lay-up. A few moments later, GWU regained the working margin as
Sherika Montgomery connected on a short jumper for a 13-7
advantage.
Dominique Hudson's 17 points in the first stanza led the way, but
head coach Rick Reeves' team couldn't overcome a late run by the
visitors and trailed 39-34 at the intermission.
For the game, the Bulldogs drained 48.2 percent of their shots,
including five-of-11 from downtown. Once again, GWU's bench came to
play, outscoring the visitors by two, 28-26.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday at 3:30 p.m., when they host
Tennessee Temple.
