Junior Meranda Burnett established a school record with
nine assists as Gardner-Webb combined to dish out 21 assists in the
83-51 victory over Tennessee Temple Saturday afternoon in a
non-conference contest.
The Bulldogs improve to 4-1 on the young season.
For head coach Rick Reeves' team, Laura Povilonyte scored a
game-high 21 points, leading three student-athletes in double
figures. Monique Hudson added 11 while Maragaret Roundtree chipped
in 10.
No GWU student-athlete grabbed double figures in rebounds, but
LaTroya Pope and Breynna Winkler each pulled down nine. Ashley
Falknor notched eight rebounds while Courtney Epps had seven. The
team amassed a season-best 56 boards while outrebounding Tennessee
Temple by 20.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to a 15-0 lead just 3:26 into the contest
and never looked back as the team connected on 17 first-half shots,
16 of which were assisted.
After the Bulldogs allowed the Crusaders to get on the board, GWU
finally extended its lead past 15 points on a triple by Povilonyte,
making the score 37-21 at the 5:29 mark.
Up by 14, 41-27, the Bulldogs closed the half on a 7-0 spurt that
covered the last 2:44 of the stanza. During that run, Falknor hit a
jumper and then Epps pulled up to hit a fast break shot, pushing
the margin to 18, 45-27. With just 49 seconds to go, Epps hit a
three-ball for a 48-27 halftime score.
In the second half, the Crusaders came out on fire and cut the
deficit to 14 with 14:39 to go. However, GWU combined pushed the
lead back to 20 after Pope, Winkler and Burnett hit shots,
Roundtree canned a charity toss for the home team.
GWU extended the lead to 25 on another lay-up by Roundtree with
4:42 to go, and that was the closest the visitors would come the
rest of the way.
Every student-athlete who entered the game for the Bulldogs got in
the scoring column.
The Bulldogs connected on 49.2 percent of their shots (30-61) while
the team hit 18 charity tosses in the contest.
GWU outscored the Crusaders 36-20 in the paint while also tallying
19 more points from the bench players.
The Bulldogs will look to extend their win streak to five games as
they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.
