WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.
The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team fought off a pesky
Winston-Salem State squad in the early going and held off a late
rally Thursday evening in the 64-55 victory in a non-conference
contest.
The Bulldogs improve to 5-2 on the season while continuing to add
to their best record in the Division I era. The Lady Rams fall to
0-7.
Monique Hudson scored a game-high 12 points while junior Margaret
Roundtree posted the team's second double-double in as many
outings. Roundtree tallied 11 points while grabbing 10 boards in
the win.
Laura Povilonyte accounted for nine points while Dominique Hudson
had eight and Courtney Epps chipped in five. Hudson also dished out
a team-high five assists despite having four fouls.
Teonika Webb had six while Meranda Burnett drained a three en route
to a five-point night. She also had three assists and two
rebounds.
The team connected on 45.8 percent of its shots (22-of-48) while
draining 16-of-22 (72.7) from the charity stripe.
After playing virtually even in the early going, GWU used a small
run late in the first half to give the team a 13-point working
margin at the intermission.
Tied at 14 apiece, Monique Hudson's three ball put the visitors up
for good with 11:05 to go in the opening stanza. Burnett followed
her up with a shot from way downtown for a six-point working margin
a minute later.
At the 9:46 mark, WSSU would pull within four, but it would mark
the closest the home squad would be the rest of the night. That was
in part due to the solid play of Monique Hudson, Courtney Epps and
Roundtree.
Up 27-22 with just over five minutes to go in the half, Ashley
Falknor hit a short shot off a stellar pass from Burnett to go up
seven. Povilonyte, Burnett and Sherika Montgomery scored on
consecutive possessions to push the lead to 13 with 2:27 to go.
Dominique Hudson's shot with 39 seconds to play gave the Red and
Black its largest lead of the night.
In the opening half, the bench play was the big reason GWU had the
lead as the team combined for 17 points to WSSU's two.
The Bulldogs continued to stretch the lead in
the second half, going up by as many as 19 on a lay-up by
Povilonyte. GWU continued to maintain a lead of at least 10
virtually the entire rest of the way. However, the Lady Rams cut it
to eight with 2:54 to play, but the Bulldogs hit their charity
tosses to keep it at a positive distance.
The bench outscored WSSU by 21 points for the contest and by 13 in
the paint. The Bulldogs converted 13 miscues into 20 points en
route to the victory.
With head coach Rick Reeves with his family as assistant coach
Krystal Reeves-Evans was giving birth to her first child, assistant
coach Kim Clark filled in for him as the acting head coach.
Assistant coach Deondra Carter and Brad Evans all played large
roles on the sideline for the Bulldogs in the win.
GWU is off for the next 11 days as the team breaks for finals. The
Bulldogs return to action Dec. 16 at 7 p.m., when they play at East
Carolina.
