Bulldogs Have Fine Showing In Season-Opening Meet

BOONE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's and
women's track and field teams put on a solid showing Friday evening
at the Appalachian Invitational, which kicked off the indoor
season, but the highlight of the meet was Carrie Long's
school-record setting performance in the pole vault.
In the 25th event of the day, Long tied Appalachian's Shea Snow
after clearing a school-record 3.65m (11'11.75"). It is six inches
better than the previous school record that Long and Kelly Bridges
had shared. Long finished second due to jumps.
Bridges put on a solid showing, taking fourth in the event with a
height of 3.35m (10'11.75"). Newcomer Brooke Yeakley tied for
seventh after a collegiate debut of 3.20m (10'6").
Rookie Ann Marie Howell notched a sixth-place effort in the high
jump after clearing 1.53m (5'0.25"). Fellow newcomer Sarah Herd was
ninth after clearing the same height as Howell, but was ninth due
to jumps.
Multi-event specialist Victoria Argus was 10th in the 55m hurdles,
earning a time of 8.77.
Newcomer Elisabeth Sawyer had a solid track debut in the 800m.
Sawyer earned an eighth-place performance after crossing in
2:38.92. Teammate Dina Nshisso was virtually right behind her,
taking ninth in 2:38.99.
Beth Long and Bree Tharpe were side-by-side for much of the mile
run, but Long pulled away for fifth place. Long crossed in 5:40.69
while Tharpe's time of 5:50.33 was good enough for sixth.
Carrie Minard led a trio of Bulldogs in the 3,000m. Minard was
fifth in a time of 11:31.55 while Laura Scott was sixth in
11:34.52. Rebecca Silleman took seventh in a solid time of
11:52.10.
Senior all-region competitor Cary Daane was back at it in the shot
put. Daane recorded a heave of 12.28m (40'3.50") for seventh place.
She then turned around and took eighth in the weight throw with a
mark of 13.83m (45'4").
The men's team opened things up with Johnathon Rucker and Evan
Brusich each posting top-10 efforts in the 55m hurdles. Rucker was
eighth (8.10) while Rucker notched a 10th-place performance by
crossing in 8.18.
Newcomer Jason Wenzel garnered a fifth-place effort in the mile
after finishing in 4:43.85. Charlie Steinke was seventh (4:54.79)
while Erin Goodrum took eighth (5:02.77).
Returner Tim Israel tied Michael Davis in the 3,000m as each had a
time of 9:14.95, tying for fourth. Nick Kelly was just behind him,
taking sixth in 9:19.69.
All-conference competitor Jake Didion was fifth in the triple jump
after leaping 14.45m (47'5"). Newcomer CJ Wise also took to the
jumps events pretty well, claiming ninth in the high jump after
clearing 1.83m (6').
Adam Reed barely missed a top-10 finish in the pole vault. Reed
went 4.12m (13'6.25"), placing 11th. He tied with Charlotte's Sam
Hodapp in the event.
The Gardner-Webb teams will now break for finals. The next time the
Bulldogs will suit up is Jan. 9-10 when they participate at the
Virginia Tech Invitational.
