GWU's Miller, Spake Earn Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference Honors

DELAND, Fla. – Gardner-Webb collected some postseason
individual hardware Tuesday night at the Atlantic Sun Conference
Championship Tournament banquet, with designated hitter Bubbie
Spake and outfielder Brock Miller earning second-team
All-Conference honors.
The duo are the eighth and ninth players to earn All-Atlantic Sun
Conference honors since GWU began league play in 2003.
Spake (Catawba, N.C. / Bandys HS / Surry CC) enters the league's
marquis event batting .320 with a team-high 14 home runs and 60
RBI. The junior standout's home run and RBI totals are the best of
Gardner-Webb's Division I era (since 2001), and rank among the
A-Sun's leaders heading into the postseason. Spake has also rapped
out 13 doubles, scored 47 runs and has a .599 slugging percentage
in 2008.
Spake is in his first season at GWU, after totaling 105 RBI and 23
home runs in two combined seasons at Surry (N.C.) Community College
– where he earned second-team NJCAA All-America honors as a
sophomore in 2007.
Miller (Alma, Ga. / Bacon County HS) has been a sparkplug at the
top of the A-Sun's most potent offensive attack in 2008, batting a
career-high .426 to go with 27 stolen bases, 41 runs scored and 12
doubles. The 5-foot-6, 175-pounder has struck out just 14 times in
136 at bats – and has put together an eye-popping .506 on base
percentage this season. Miller's stolen bases total for 2008 is the
second-highest in GWU history, trailing only Frank Cauthen (30
steals, 1974).
Miller has swiped 48 career bases at Gardner-Webb, and has been
thrown out just once in the last two seasons combined (37-of-38).
Also one of the league's most effective defensive players, the
speedy Miller has narrowed the hitting alleys for opposing teams in
addition to posting a team-high nine outfield assists.
Gardner-Webb, the #4 seed in 2008, opens tournament play against #3
seed Belmont at 3 pm ET on Wednesday at Melching Field. Live stats
