BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Head men's and women's golf coach Tee Burton turned in an impressive finish recently at the 44th North Carolina Open at the Reserve Club, which was hosted at St. James Plantation.
Burton recorded a one-under par 215 for the tournament, which allowed him to place eighth.
After firing an opening round 73, Burton shot back-to-back scores of 71 over the final 36 holes. He finished just one stroke out of fourth place as four shot two-under par, 214.
On the final round, Burton opened up the par-four first hole with a birdie. However, he bogeyed the par-three second hole and par-five seventh hole.
Burton, a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference selection during his collegiate days (and a member of the All-50th Anniversary team), got back on track as he posted three straight birdies after the turn.
On the par-four 10th hole, he shot a three as he duplicated the feat on 11. On the par-five 12th hole, Burton shot a four. After bogeying the par-four 14th, he came back strong, paring the next two holes. On 17, he again shot one-under par for the hole.
Karl Kimball of Hillsborough won the event with a six-under par, 210.
Burton will guide the Gardner-Webb men's and women's programs
into the Big South Conference at the start of the 2008-09 academic
school year.
