CHARLESTON, S.C. The Gardner-Webb volleyball program dropped both matches it played Saturday on the final day of the College of Charleston tournament. The Bulldogs fell to the College of Charleston in the first match before dropping a match to Duke in the evening session.
The Bulldogs now stand at 2-11 on the season.
In the first match of the day, GWU took on the host Cougars. CofC
won the match by a 3-0 score (16-25, 13-25, 16-25).
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was rookie Lauren Evans, who
notched a team-best six kills. However, junior Brett Wilson led the
team with a .250 attack percentage.
The Bulldogs managed just 20 kills for the match. The Red and Black
dished out 18 assists, 15 of which came via junior Regina Feagin.

while rookie Laura Wilcox and Evans each assisted on two blocks.

assist.
CofC posted 46 kills and a .293 attack percentage while also
combining for 59 digs in the match.
GWU never took the lead in set one, but made it close in the early
going. After trailing early on, the Bulldogs tied it on an attack
error from Mercer transfer Jennifer Darty at 5-5. However, the
Cougars went on a 9-1 spurt to put the contest out of reach. GWU
could only pull within seven on a block by Evans and Wilcox, making
the score 17-10.
In set two, Moffitt found Evans, who pounded home a ball for a 6-5
lead. The Bulldogs saw the lead slip away after an attack error by
Moffitt allowed the home team to tie the score. After trading
points, an 8-1 run by the Cougars gave them a lead they would not
relinquish.
A 10-3 run to open set three by the home team put the contest out
of reach as GWU could pull within five at 13-8. From that point on,
the Cougars took control of the set, eventually winning 25-16.
Against the Blue Devils, Wilcox posted a team-best 11 kills and hit
an outstanding .429. She also chipped in an ace.
Bethany Martin and Heidi Steinebrunner each added four kills while
Feagin dished out 23 assists to go along with 16 digs.
Steinebrunner and Tamia Herholz each split the defense for a
team-best two service aces. Martin had the Bulldogs' lone block,
which now puts her at 199 career stuffs.
Matykowski also had a solid effort, amassing 11 digs.
GWU took an early 7-3 lead on the Blue Devils. Steinebrunner notched both of her aces during the stretch, but most of the points came off Duke's unforced miscues.
After the Blue Devils took an 11-9 lead, Wilcox slammed home a
ball, pulling GWU within one. However, Duke went on a 6-0 run. The
Blue Devils gradually stretched their lead before posting a 25-14
set one victory.
Set two was a completely different story. Head coach Chris
Phillips' team came out strong, taking a 15-10 lead on a kill by
Herholz. Martin's kill a few points later gave the team a 19-15
advantage. GWU then extended it to six after an attack error and
another kill by Martin. Duke then went on a 6-0 run to knot the
contest before tacking on another point for a 22-21 lead.
GWU tied the set at 22-22 on Evans' kill, but Duke answered back
with two points of its own before an attack error gave the Bulldogs
their 23rd point. Trying to fight back and tie the set,
the Blue Devils were able to slam the door shut on the next point,
winning the set 25-23.
Duke put the third set away early, going on a 16-3 run to start the
contest before winning the set 25-11.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday night in their Big South
Conference opener at Presbyterian. The match is slated to begin at
7 p.m.
