CULLOWHEE, N.C. The Gardner-Webb men's and women's cross country teams had solid performances at the Catamount Classic Saturday morning. Just about everyone on the women's team established a personal-best time to help the squad finish third while the men's team posted a fourth-place effort.
"All but three of our girls set a personal best," head coach Brian Baker said. "We are coming along nicely this year. It is by far the best performance we've had this year.
Abby Callahan posted the Bulldogs' top finish on the women's side
with a 13th-place performance. She crossed the line in
19:44.97. Carrie Minard was the Bulldogs' second finisher, posting
a time of 19:52.74, which was good enough for 15th place.
Diana Palka and Beth Long weren't too far behind, finishing 17th and 18th, respectively. Palka finished in 20:25.47 while Long came across in 20:32.36.
Laura Scott tallied a finish of 20:50.18, earning her a spot in the
top 20 at number 20. Rebecca Silleman was the sixth GWU
student-athlete to come across the 5k course after posting a
personal-best time of 20:53.79. Her time was good enough for
21st place. Teammate Bree Tharpe wasn't too far behind
her, taking 23rd. Tharpe had a time of 21:21.89.
Georgia won the meet on both the men's and women's sides.
Freshman Nick Kelly took top honors for the Bulldogs once again. He ended up 11th for the 8k run with a time of 26:41.31.
Tim Israel posted a solid 17th-place finish after crossing the line in 28:27.33. Justin Keziah was just two spots behind Israel, taking 19th with a time of 28:41.80.
Newcomer Jacob Hoyle took 23rd after a performance of
29:21.24 while Erin Goodrum had a top-30 finish, taking
28th. Goodrum crossed the finish line in 30:46.25.
"On the men's side, everyone didn't run. We had a couple of kids hurt and we are trying to get them healthy. Nick Kelly ran really well for us. Our guys are getting better, but we just have to get healthy."
The teams return to action Sept. 27 when they travel to East
Carolina.
