September 26, 2008 | Volleyball
CLINTON, S.C. Behind a solid game plan and the squad being fired up for its first-ever Big South match, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team came out in dominant fashion Friday evening, downing Presbyterian by a 3-0 score (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) for GWU's first Big South Conference win in school history.
The Bulldogs improve to 3-11 on the season and 1-0 in the league.
Presbyterian falls to 3-9 and 0-1 in conference competition.
Leading the way for GWU was senior Heidi Steinebrunner, who posted a match-best 12 kills. Rookie Laura Wilcox, the two-time Big South Freshman of the Week, slammed home eight kills in the sweep as did fellow newcomer Lauren Evans.
Junior Regina Feagin added to her career assist record by dishing
out 38 more on the day. Senior Bethany Martin notched her 200th
career block while fourth-year student-athlete Katie Matykowski
tied Audra Harrison for career digs after notching 11 in the
match.
Freshman Tamia Herholz totaled seven assists to go along with 11 digs. Wilcox also reached double figures in digs with 10.
"Our middle blockers did a really good job of drawing Presbyterian's attention, which opened up some lanes for Heidi," head coach Chris Phillips said. "It was a nice evening for us.
"Heidi played really well tonight as did Even Moffitt. During the first two sets, Evan did a great job of keeping us in it with key swings at critical times. She also had some great digs when we really needed them.
"The team did a great job when they stepped on the court tonight. They came out and wanted to win in three sets while limiting Presbyterian's runs. All around, the team did a good job and was very excited to get a win."
The Bulldogs return to Big South Conference action tomorrow when
they play host to Winthrop University at 2 p.m., for their home
league opener.
