
Blue Devils Escape with 110-88 Win

The Gardner-Webb men's swim program was unable to overcome an early deficit as it suffered the third loss of the 2008-09 season Saturday afternoon, dropping the meet to Duke by a 110-88 count.
GWU was able to claim second place in the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay. Samuel Woods, Casey Brutus, Patrick Elerding and George Partin combined to touch the wall in 1:38.22, less than a second behind the Blue Devils who touched the wall in 1:37.56.
Close the entire race, Derek Gore was defeated by Sean Smith in the last little bit of the 1,000 free. However, his time of 10:14.44 gave him a second-place finish. Adam Suggs was third in a time of 10:17.56. Gore's time moved him into third place on the GWU career list for finishes in the event.
Woods took third in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.81, which ranks as the fourth-best time in school history. Tucker Dupree was able to place fifth with a personal-best 1:51.49, which good enough for fifth-best in school history.
Partin was just off his personal-best by touching the wall in 22.37 in the 50 free. The time was good enough for the third fastest in school history. Steven Caudill was right on his heels, finishing with a time of 22:57. Caudill's time put him fourth-fastest on the school's all-time record board.
Abram Miller and Adam Roka went three and four in the 400 IM, which was the last event before the break. Miller touched in 4:26.66 while Roka was fourth in 4:29.57, which are the sixth and seventh-fastest marks in school history.
Elerding was a few seconds off his record-setting performance the 100 fly, touching the wall at 53.58. Adam Middleton almost took third, but was beaten by .04 seconds for a fourth-best time of 54.37. Elerding and Middleton's times are fifth and seventh-best in school history.
Partin took first in the 100 free, edging out the second place finisher by .20 seconds. Partin touched the wall at 48.14, giving him the first and second-best marks in school history in the 100 free.
Woods had a solid performance in the 100 back as he improved upon his ranking in GWU history. Woods' second-place time of 55.28 was .16 slower than the first-place finisher, but was good enough to place him second place all-time in this event. Dupree's time of 57.05 was good enough for fourth and places him sixth all-time in the 100 back.
Miller led a trio of Bulldogs in the 500 free as he recorded a sub-five minute score. Miller touched the wall in 4:59.90 for second place.
Another trio of Bulldogs competed in the 100 breast and were able to place one-two-three in the event. Elerding led the trio with a time of 1:00.89, followed closely by Brutus and Burchens who finished 1:01.37 and 1:01.42 respectively. The trio will now rank fourth-fifth-and sixth in the career record book.
The 400 free relay team of Caudill, Dupree, Middleton and Musco combined to touch the wall in a time of 3:21.79. The time was good enough for fourth-place and places them fifth all-time in the record book.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, January 24th at
Davidson. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
