
Bulldogs Drop 168-111 Decision at Davidson

The Gardner-Webb men's swim program was put in a good effort but
was unable to seal the deal, as it suffered the third loss of the
2008-09 season Saturday afternoon, dropping the meet to Davidson by
a 168-111 count.
The Bulldogs started the meet with a first-place win in the 200
medley relay. Samuel Woods, Casey Brutus, Patrick Elerding and
George Partin combined to touch the wall in 1:38.91, almost a
second faster than Davidson' top team.
The Bulldogs took second-third-fourth in the 1000 free with Abram
Miller leading in a time of 10:05.98. Adam Suggs and Michael Roka
finished in 10:20.57 and 10:26.37.
Partin was able to gain a second-place finish in the 200 free with
a time of 1:43.94; a mere .61 seconds off the first-place
time.
Woods and Matthew Leonard finished second and fourth in the men's
100 back. Woods touched the wall at 54.10 and was followed by
Leonard who finished at 57.00.
A trio of Bulldogs placed in the 100 breast, finishing one-two-four
in the event. Elerding led the trio with a time of 58.79, followed
closely by Brutus and Burchins who finished 1:01.16 and 1:02.40
respectively.
Another trio of Bulldog swimmers placed in the men's 200 fly,
finishing one-three-four in the event. Steven Caudill led the trio
with a time of 1:55.83, followed closely by Miller at 2:01.19 and
Derek Gore at 2:03.58.
Elerding was the lone Bulldog to place in the 50 free, taking
fourth-place with a time of 22.67.
Abram Miller and Adam Roka went three and four in the 400 IM, which
was the last event before the break. Miller touched in 4:26.66
while Roka was fourth in 4:29.57, which are the sixth and
seventh-fastest marks in school history.
Elerding was a few seconds off his record-setting performance the
100 fly, touching the wall at 53.58. Adam Middleton almost took
third, but was beaten by .04 seconds for a fourth-best time of
54.37. Elerding and Middleton's times are fifth and seventh-best
in school history.
Partin, who currently holds the fastest time in school history at
the 100 free, was a bit off his personal best time and finished
fourth with a time of 48.76.
Gardner-Webb was able to place three in the 200 back with Gore
leading the trio with a time of 2:01.65. His teammates, Woods and
Saxon Simpson, finished at 2:06.85 and 2:07.35 respectively.
Brutus and Burchins were able to place first and third in the men's
200 breast. Brutus took first by touching the wall at 2:15.64,
followed by Burchins at third with a time of 2:17.40.
Miller led a trio of Bulldogs in the 500 free as he recorded a
sub-five minute score. Miller touched the wall in 4:56.63 for
second place. He was followed by Michael Roka (5:02.49) and Suggs
(5:03.13).
Gardner-Webb was able to place one in the 100 fly, as Elerding
finished second on the podium with a time of 52.26; a mere .05
seconds off the first-place time.
Caudill and Burchins came in second and third in the 200 IM.
Caudill finished second with a sub-two minute time of 1:59.71 and
Burchins took third with a time of 2:03.65.
The 200 free relay team of Caudill, Burchins, Simpson and Musco
combined to touch the wall in a time of 1:32.78, good enough for
third in the event.
The Bulldogs will take a week to recover before returning to action
next weekend, January 30-31, at the College of Charleston.
