Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team posted a team attack percentage of .325 over the three set match en route to sweeping the Radford Highlanders in straight sets 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19 in Paul Porter Arena on Friday night.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 11-15 overall and 3-6 in
conference play, including completing the season series sweep of
the Highlanders. The loss drops Radford to 11-15 overall and 1-8
in Big South play.
GWU got things going early, running out to a 4-1 lead on a Radford
attack error in the first set. However, the Highlanders found its
rhythm, battling back to tie the score up at 5-5 on a Kiley Kent
service ace.
The two teams then went back-and-forth in what was a seesaw set,
until a 4-0 Gardner-Webb run capped off by a Molly Rhyne kill
pushed the Lady Bulldogs out in front at 16-12.
Yet the Highlanders refused to go away, as Radford stormed back to
knot the score up late at 20-20.
A Radford service error was all the Lady Bulldogs needed, as GWU
finished the set on a 5-0 run topped off by a Melissa Richie kill
to take set one 25-20.
Up 1-0, the Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the second
set, falling behind 2-0 out of the gates. However, a kill by
Richie got the Lady Bulldogs rolling, as the home team ran off five
straight points to take a 5-2 lead on a Laura Wilcox kill.
Radford had an answer, as the Highlanders responded with an 8-5 run
to take a 10-8 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.
After five lead changes and five ties, the Lady Bulldogs took the
lead for good at 18-17, as Rhyne slammed a kill into the floor,
jump-starting a 6-0 run.
Radford answered with a kill by Lauren Clary to cut the GWU lead to
23-18, yet the Lady Bulldogs finished with back-to-back points to
win set two 25-18.
In set three, the Lady Bulldogs recorded a .366 attack percentage
while posting 20 kills over the set, controlling the final set from
start to finish.
Radford was able to tie the score up at 9-9, yet the Lady Bulldogs
ran out to a six point lead at 21-15, as GWU had four different
players with two kills apiece during the offensive surge.
Despite the Highlanders trying to put together a run late, GWU was
just too much on Friday night, downing the visitors 25-19 in the
third set and 3-0 overall.
Wilcox led the way, as the sophomore posted a career-high attack
percentage of .650 en route to picking up 14 kills. Rhyne tallied
a match-high 15 kills, while fellow freshman Richie added 8 kills
of her own over the three-set match. Senior Regina Feagin dished
out a match-high 46 set assists, while fellow senior Brett Wilson
recorded a match-high 17 digs.
For Radford, both Laura Waddell and Clary posted seven kills
apiece; while Clary also had a team-high 13 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will have a week off before traveling to
Charleston, S.C. to square off with the Lady Buccaneers of
Charleston Southern on Friday night, October 30, at 7 p.m.
