Lady Bulldogs Take Down Eagles 2-0 In Big South Conference Opener
October 04, 2009 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Under a full moon in the clear Carolina skies Saturday night, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team defeated the Winthrop Eagles by a 2-0 score in the squad's Big South Conference opener at Greene-Harbison Field.
Gardner-Webb (7-5-0) was able to take the lead late in the first half when junior Sarah Keyser was able to score off of penalty kick after being fouled hard by Winthrop senior Stevie Lucas. The goal was the third of the season for the Boonsboro, Maryland native.
A physical match throughout, in which members of both squads received yellow cards, was sealed for the Lady Bulldogs when redshirt junior Jillian Dean was able to find the back of the net when she sent a header past Eagle redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil. Both Keyser and sophomore Stephanie Benshoof assisted the goal. The goal was the first of the season for Dean, a defender from Sewell, New Jersey.
Winthrop (3-6-1) had a few opportunities to score, yet freshman goalkeeper Samantha Rupert was able to prevent the Eagles from striking. The Cincinnati, Ohio native had two saves to shut out the Eagles, giving her a total of four shutout victories so far this season.
Gardner-Webb will return to action Friday, October 9th when they host the High Point Panthers. The match is set to take place at 7:00 PM at Greene-Harbison Field.
