October 04, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team battled the Winthrop Eagles for 110 minutes on Saturday night, as the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Boiling Springs, N.C.
With the draw, the Bulldogs move to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Big
South play, while Winthrop goes to 6-2-1 and 1-0-1 in conference
play.
In what proved to be a very intense and physical match, as both
teams combined for 49 fouls and seven yellow cards, Saturday
night's match fell right in line of the budding rivalry between the
Bulldogs and Eagles on the pitch in men's soccer action.
The Eagles struck first, as Michael Luke put the visitors on the
scoreboard in the 40th minute by sending a free kick around the top
right corner of the GWU wall, putting the ball just under the
crossbar and over the outstretched hands of Gardner-Webb keeper
Trent Kozman.
However, Gardner-Webb responded with a goal of its own only four
minutes later, as in the 44th minute redshirt-senior Gerard
Hefferon received a rebounded ball off the Winthrop keeper's chest,
took one touch and fired, putting the shot in the lower right
corner to tie the score up at 1-1.
The score would remain tied up at 1-1 until in the 64th minute the
Bulldogs scored the go ahead goal as Jon Ole Reinhardsen scored on
a bicycle kick, sending the ball over the back of his head and into
the back right corner of the net to give GWU a 2-1 lead.
Yet the Eagles would not let up, as Winthrop knotted the score up
again in the 71st minute by way of a penalty kick. Winthrop took
advantage of a GWU foul in the penalty box, as Matthew Skonicki
belted the penalty kick into the bottom left of the goal, past a
diving Kozman, knotting the score up 2-2.
The two teams continued to try to score the game-winning goal, as
GWU had four shots all fly off target in the final 18 minutes of
regulation, forcing the match into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Bulldogs outshot Winthrop 4-1, yet could
only put one of those shots on goal, which was saved by Winthrop's
Enrique Miranda.
In the second overtime it was the Eagles who were on the attack, as
Winthrop fired off two shots in the final ten minutes of play, but
to no avail, as Kozman and the GWU defense held the Eagles
scoreless as the final horn sounded with the score still at
2-2.
GWU's Kozman had five saves over the 110 minutes, while Winthrop's
Miranda recorded six saves.
For the match, the Bulldogs outshot Winthrop 18-16, putting eight
of those shots on goal.
Freshman John Sargent had an assist on both GWU goals, while
sophomore Jovan Ivanovich also had an assist on the Reinhardsen
goal.
The Bulldogs will hit the road for its next match, as Coach
Setzer's squad will travel to Conway, S.C. to face off with the
Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, October 7, at 7
p.m. That game is slated to be video streamed via the Big South
Network at www.bigsouthsports.com.
