November 14, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Charlotte, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team had four players receive Big South All-Conference recognition announced the League office today. Redshirt-senior forward Gerard Hefferon and redshirt-freshman defender Jovan Ivanovich were both named to the First-Team All-Conference, while junior midfield Romeo Kabanda and redshirt-freshman defender Jon Ole Reinhardsen were both named to the Second-Team All-Conference. Freshman midfielder John Sargent was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Hefferon led the Bulldogs with nine goals and 25 points on the
year. Hefferon also added seven assists, which was second on the
team. Hefferon tallied two game-winning goals, including the
game-winning goal in the 2-1 win over UNCA. Hefferon was named to
the College Soccer News National Team of the Week back in September
and was also named the Big South Conference player of the Week on
September 9th. Hefferon was third in the conference in points (25)
and in goals (9). Four of Hefferon's nine goals came in conference
play.
Ivanovich, who played in every game for the Bulldogs this season,
recorded one goal and two assists from the defender position.
Ivanovich's goal came in the Bulldogs 4-2 loss to Appalachian
State. Ivanovich's two assists came in the Bulldogs 3-2 win over
Jacksonville and the 2-2 tie against Winthrop. Ivanovich was key
in the Bulldogs three shutouts this season and helped GWU post
eight wins on the season thus far; the most GWU has had since
2006. Ivanovich was also named the Co-Big South Conference play of
the Week on September 29.
Kabanda was first on the team with eight assists and finished
second on the team with five goals, totaling 18 points. Kabanda
had two-game winning goals, both in conference wins. Kabanda has
played and started in all 156games for GWU this season. He has
fired off 32 shots on the season, putting 13 of them on goal for a
shots on goal percentage of .406 for the season.
Reinhardsen totaled one goal and two assists from the defender
position. Reinhardsen's goal came in the Bulldogs 2-2
double-overtime draw with Winthrop. His assists came in the
Bulldogs 5-2 win over Georgia Southern and the 2-1 win over
Liberty. Reinhardsen was key in the two shutouts this season and
helped GWU post eight wins on the season thus far; the most GWU has
had since 2006.
Sargent was third on the team with four goals and five assists on
the season, totaling 13 points. Sargent's first career goal was
monumental, as his goal was the game-winning goal in the Bulldogs
1-0 victory over Clemson, its first ever win over an ACC member in
17 tries. Sargent's other game-winning goal came in yet another
GWU 1-0 win over PC. The midfielder has played in every game this
season. He has recorded 36 shots on the season, putting 17 of them
on frame for a .472 shots on goal percentage.
