
Lady Bulldogs' Senior Night Spoiled in the 3-0 Loss To Winthrop

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball seniors Jessica Clayton, Regina Feagin and Brett Wilson had their Senior Night spoiled on Friday night, as the Winthrop Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Bulldogs 3-0 in Big South Conference action.
Gardner-Webb falls to 11-21 overall and 3-12 in conference play
with the loss, while Winthrop improves to 19-9 overall and 11-4 in
the Big South with the win.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early in set one on a kill by Kaley
Viola of Winthrop, yet battled back to knot the score up at 4-4 on
a kill by freshman outside hitter Carolina Solano.
The two teams then traded points back-and-forth over the next
several rallies, until Winthrop put together a 5-0 run to pull out
to a 16-11 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs would get as close as five points at 18-13 on a
kill by freshman Melissa Richie, only to have the Lady Eagles
finish the set out on a 7-5 run and take the opening frame at
25-18.
In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs again played from behind from
start to finish trailing by as much as only four points early at
13-9.
Winthrop soared out to a 15-9 lead before the Lady Bulldogs found
some offense, cutting the lead to four at 19-15 on a Laura Wilcox
kill. However, like in the first game, the Lady Eagles were to
strong down the stretch, taking the second set 25-18.
The third set was non-stop action from start to finish, as it final
set saw seven ties and five lead changes as the Lady Bulldogs
refused to roll over for Winthrop.
Gardner-Webb took the early lead at 2-0 on a Evan Moffitt service
ace, only to have the Lady Eagles soar back into the lead at 16-10
on an 16-8 run.
The Lady Bulldogs fought its way back into the set, cutting the
lead to one point at 23-22 on a kill by freshman Molly Rhyne.
Gardner-Webb then took a 25-24 lead on a kill by Solano, which the
Lady Eagles answered with a kill by Kelley Taylor to retie the
score up at 25-25.
After a Winthrop service error gave the Lady Bulldogs the 26-25
lead, Winthrop closed out the match with three straight points to
pick up the 28-26 set victory and seal the 3-0 match win.
Both Rhyne and Wilcox tallied double-digit kills with 11 and 10,
respectively, while senior libero Brett Wilson collected a
team-high 15 digs. Senior setter Regina Feagin passed out 30
assists on the night, while Moffitt had two service aces.
Taylor's 11 kills led Winthrop, while Sara Felts added 10 kills of
her own over the three-set match.
The Lady Bulldogs final regular season contest will come tomorrow
afternoon, November 14th, as Gardner-Webb will host the Lady
Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.
