
Runnin' Bulldogs Sprint Past Covenant College, 89-48, In Season Opener

BOILING SPRINGS - Auryn MacMillan had 17 points, 11 rebounds and
six blocked shots Saturday, pacing Gardner-Webb's 89-48 rout of
Covenant College in the season opener.
MacMillan (Melbourne, Australia) played just 20 minutes in the
game, but hit 8-of-10 shots in a fine overall effort. Gardner-Webb
(1-0) shot 54.7 percent as a team, and used a 30-2 run to take a
39-12 lead with just over four minutes remaining before
intermission.
The Runnin' Bulldogs led 48-22 at the break, and pushed the lead to
as large as 44 points in the second half. Jonathan Moore added 14
points for Gardner-Webb (5-of-8 shooting), and C.J. Hailey netted
nine points in 13 minutes of action.
Grayson Flittner, seeing his first career action at point guard,
scored eight points, dished off six assists (no turnovers) and had
two steals in 20 minutes. Freshman Stefon Johnson came off the
bench to score eight points on four dunks (16 minutes), while
Thomas Staton and David Brown each netted seven points off the
bench.
Gardner-Webb ran the floor well in its debut, outscoring Covenant
25-2 on the fast break and turning 28 Scots' turnovers directly
into 30 points. GWU rode MacMillan and the fast break to a 53-20
edge in the paint as well.
Covenant shot just 27.1 percent for the game (16-of-59), with
forward Sam Bowman leading the scoring effort with 10 points.
Gardner-Webb will play at home again on Monday, November 16, at
8:15 pm against Montreat - the second of three home games to start
the season before heading to No. 4 North Carolina on November
23.
