November 02, 2009 | Volleyball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team has a challenging week ahead, as the Lady Bulldogs will face off with three Big South Conference foes over a five-day period.
Gardner-Webb (11-16, 3-7 Big South) will host UNC Asheville on
Tuesday night, with the match slated to start at 7 p.m. in Paul
Porter Arena. GWU will then hit the road for its next two matches,
taking on High Point on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then traveling
north to do battle with the Liberty Lady Flames at 2 p.m. on
Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs have dropped its last three matches against UNC
Asheville with its last win coming back in 2006. In the two teams'
previous meetings this season, Gardner-Webb took the first two sets
only to have UNCA battle back to win the final three sets and pick
up the 3-2 come from behind win.
On Friday night, the Lady Bulldogs will face off with the Panthers
of High Point University at 7 p.m. in High Point, N.C. GWU will
look to avenge an earlier 3-0 loss to the Panthers back on October
10th. In fact, High Point has won the last four match-ups against
the Lady Bulldogs and holds a 9-2 all-time series lead over GWU
since 2001.
Gardner-Webb will then turn right around to take on the Lady Flames
of Liberty at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs took
Liberty to the limit back on October 9th before falling 3-2 at home
to the preseason favorites. Gardner-Webb has not beaten the Lady
Flames since moving to NCAA Division I in 2001.
All three teams are ahead of the Lady Bulldogs in the overall Big
South Conference standings, with Liberty and UNC Asheville holding
down the top-two spots, respectively.
