Raleigh, N.C. - Gardner-Webb brothers Dustin and Travis Porter
both shined on Saturday at the 2009 N.C. State Open in Raleigh,
N.C., as older brother Dustin took second-place in the 285-pound
division while Travis finished in fourth-place in the 197-pound
class.
Wrestling unattached GWU redshirt-senior Dustin Porter took
advantage of a first round bye, as he picked up back-to-back pin
fall victories over Michael Gregory of UNC-Greensboro (5:43) and
Ivan Muller of The Citadel (4:37) to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Porter earned a 9-3 decision over Tom Minwell of
Chattanooga, placing him in the finals, where he suffered a
two-point takedown in the second overtime to lose to Peter Sturgeon
of UNC-Greensboro 6-4.
At 197, redshirt-freshman Travis Porter bounced back from a first
round 6-3 loss to Anthony Tortora of Hofstra to finish 3-2 on the
day and in fourth-place overall. After his first round loss and a
bye, Porter pinned Corey Sullivan of Newberry (5:48) and then
defeated Christian McLean 6-2 to stay alive in the consolation
bracket.
Porter's next opponent was a rematch with Tortora, as Porter picked
up a 3-2 win to advance to the consolation championship round where
he then fell to Caylor Williams of UNC-Greensboro in a 6-4 decision
to finish in fourth overall.
Other notable performances by Gardner-Webb on Saturday was
redshirt-freshman Richie Spicel at 141, Ryan Medved at 149, Alex
Medved at 157, Pelsang at 165 and Jason Porter at 184.
Spicel picked up a 5-1 decision in the first round over Nicholas
LaFevre of The Citadel, but then suffered a 9-0 major decision loss
to Joe Kemmerer of Liberty in the second round. The
redshirt-freshman from Ohio bounced back to defeat Cole Louks of
Virginia Tech 7-4 and then picked up a 13-3 major decision win over
Chris Mullen of Duke to stay alive in the consolation bracket.
Spicel then advanced by an injury default where he met Kevin
Timothy of The Citadel, who edged Spicel for the 8-6 victory.
GWU's Ryan Medved defeated Newberry's Nick Pare in an exciting
19-16 win in the first round and drew a bye in the second round,
advancing to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals Medved
suffered a pin at 1:30 in the match to Justin Accordino of Hofstra
to fall into the consolation bracket.
In the 149-pound consolation bracket, Medved held on to a close 9-8
decision over Tayler Decker of Newberry and then went on to defeat
Daniel Helena of North Carolina 7-4 before falling to AJ Guardado
of Duke 13-5 in a major decision loss.
At 157, it was Alex Medved who advanced to the quarterfinals round
by way of a bye and a 10-0 major decision win over Zane Newton of
The Citadel. In the quarterfinal, Medved suffered a major decision
loss of his own, falling to Joey Knox of Chattanooga 11-0.
In the consolation bracket, Medved drew Bond Davis of Chattanooga
and lost a close 1-0 decision to Davis.
GWU's David Pelsang bounced back from a 6-0 loss to Justin Sparrow
of The Citadel to go 2-2 on the day. In the consolation rounds,
Pelsang defeated fellow Bulldog David Sweeney 5-0 and then picked
up a 4-2 win over William Booth of N.C. State before falling to
David Henry of Dallas Dynamite 3-2.
While at 184, Jason Porter, who wrestled unattached, used a first
round bye to jump start his day, as he picked up a 9-0 major
decision win over Andrew Phillips of UNC and a 7-4 win over Brian
Newman of Newberry to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinal round, Porter fought tooth and nail yet it wasn't
quite enough as he fell to the eventual champion at 184 Ben Clymer
of Hofstra 7-3. Porter than dropped his next match, his first and
only in the consolation bracket, to Casen Eldredge of Utah Valley
in an 8-2 decision.
GWU's Matthew Featherston, Tim Burdine, and Blake Salyer all went
1-2 on the day, with each of their wins coming by way of a pin
fall.
Gardner-Webb will now set its sights on the Davidson Open schedule
for Saturday, December 5th at 10 a.m. in Davidson, N.C.
