
Strong Showing By Lady Bulldogs at Wofford Fall Invitational This Past Weekend

SPARTANBURG, SC- This past weekend, the Gardner-Webb women's tennis team participated in the Wofford Fall Invitational, hosted by Wofford College, and had an impressive showing by newcomers Erica White and Ioana Oprea.
Freshman Erica White went 3-0 in singles play, defeating Bethany Dyar of Wofford (6-1. 6-1), Stephanie Cox of Wofford (6-3, 6-1), and Cinthya Lazaro of USC-Upstate (6-1. 6-2).
In addition to her performance in singles play, she went 2-1 in doubles play with partner sophomore Tavenner Black. They defeated Stephanie Cox and Bethany Dyar of Wofford (8-4), Cara Caruso and Margaux Melby of Presbyterian (8-3), but fell to Melanie Aquirre and Victoria Krook of North Florida (8-1).
Sophomore Ioana Oprea went 3-0 as well in singles play, defeating Guinn Garcia of Wofford (6-0, 6-1), Melanie Aguirre of North Florida (7-5, 6-2), and Victoria Krook of North Florida (6-4, 6-4).
Junior Rita Gouveia also had a good weekend, going 2-1 in singles play. She defeated Paige Oelke of Presbyterian (7-5, 6-3) and Lindsay Larkin of Wofford (6-2, 6-2), but fell to Lauren Holten of North Florida (6-1, 6-2).
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on January 16th as they take on NC Central to kick of the 2010 spring schedule. The match will take place in Chapel Hill, NC at UNC-Chapel Hill and is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start time.
